24 HOURS IN LAS VEGAS: 9:11 am - The Last Redoubt, Near Dawn

  1. That pyramidal structure is, as I am sure many of you know, the Luxor Hotel and Casino. My wife and I generally stay at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay when we go to Las Vegas, and the Mandalay Bay complex is adjacent to the Luxor. We see this thing constantly, everywhere we go.

    It is such an odd building. Vaguely imposing, yes, but also very science-fictiony in that cheesy (and not at all bad) 1980s way. I always call it "The Last Redoubt" after the pyramidal megaplex that is the last home of a beleaguered humanity in William Hope Hodgson's brilliantly visionary novel "The Night Land."

    Also, we haven't seen the last of the Luxor / "The Last Redoubt" in these images. It will be a constant touchstone.
