Clearing the decks


I just got the contract for my next book, which will be out in October 2013 again from Tin House Books. I'll be making a big announcement about it next Monday morning. It'll be lots of text and lots of art. I'm very excited.

I've been thinking about this project for some time, and I've actually already gotten started on some of the art. But now it's time to really focus on the work. To immerse myself in the world of this project. For me, to do that the right way, I need to make some room. Both mentally and physically.

  1. Matt, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve recently discovered your Every Page of Moby Dick project, and I’ve been incredibly impressed by it. I recently read Moby Dick for the first time (how it had eluded me, an avid reader and former English major, I'll never know), and since almost the first sentence I’ve become verily obsessed by the novel. When I was about mid-way through (and already convinced that this was the best novel of all the novels), I happened across your blog. I found your illustrations really enhanced my experience of reading MD, especially of reading it through an electronic reader. I’d read a few chapters, and then return to your images, and then reread those passages with your images as a guide. Stylistically and thematically, your illustrations remind me very much of the art of Paul Klee, a longtime favorite of mine.

    Seriously: this is really excellent work. I plan to buy your book, and probably one of the originals sometime soon.

    Just wanted to thank you for sharing this. I have been telling my friends and family about your project, so if you’ve seen a sudden spike in your Web traffic from Minnesota, that’s probably why.

    And great to see that you’re moving on to Conrad next. HoD is a favorite of mine. When you get started on the project, I’ll be re-reading it along with you.

    Hey Matt, I just wanted to let you know that I recently discovered your Every Page of Moby Dick project, and I’m really impressed by it. I recently read MD for the first time. Since almost the first sentence I’ve become verily obsessed by the novel. (And I’m not an easily obsessed guy; I’m a rational web UX manager & ordinary dad from Minneapolis.) I have no idea how or why I never read this book before now – I’m a lifelong reader with an MA in English. Can all readers confess similar gaps? I think so.

  3. Hello Jason, and thank you very much for the kind words. I have some kind of filter or something set up so that I have to "approve" all the comments that get posted. It probably sounds a bit neurotic, like I have control issues, but really it's just to keep out the astonishing amount of spam comments I get.

    In any case, again, your words are very appreciated here. And I am not too surprised that you missed the art book / illustration project at first. While it has been a surreal and wonderful journey for me, I am still a pretty obscure person or artist. Perhaps that will change with time, but who knows. Thankfully, the reception for the art, the blog and the book itself has been really wonderful. Restored some of my sadly eroded faith in humanity, really.

    The comparison to Klee was really quite mindboggling, but an enormous compliment. I still feel uncomfortable calling myself an artist, so you can see why people like Klee are such titans to me. But yes, he has been an undeniable influence which I think probably shows in quite a few pieces.

    The Conrad project is looming, although I've already begun work. I completed ten pieces last summer, for a separate anthology, and they will be the foundation. I wasn't quite certain how I wanted to approach "Heart of Darkness." Much has been made of the manner in which psychological interpretations are critiqued as obscuring the true, and very real, horror of that period of African history. And yet, for me, the book still functions primarily as a psychological work. There can be a lot of pressure to make the drawings suitably dark and perhaps horrific, but that can easily lead one toward unwitting parody and pretentiousness. I think I know where I'm going though, so I do hope you'll stick around. I'll be sharing only about half (or less) of the pieces on this blog, at least until the collection is out in October 2013, but that should be a good window into the work.
