That thing blew my mind, and I've kind of been obsessing about it ever since.Matt Kishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17854685960260054407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265792817762899253.post-61068111025265379612010-10-07T01:57:19.851-04:002010-10-07T01:57:19.851-04:00This is like a Kirby/Budgie crossover! This is like a Kirby/Budgie crossover!Joe Kuthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11240666310090831790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265792817762899253.post-73412588323755281612010-10-06T16:51:32.240-04:002010-10-06T16:51:32.240-04:00Joel, that is awesome that you Googled Kirby Crack...Joel, that is awesome that you Googled Kirby Crackle. A time-honored building block of modern comics, and something everyone should know. Kirby is indeed one of the greats, if not the greatest of the greats.Matt Kishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17854685960260054407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265792817762899253.post-62764953503569752592010-10-06T10:35:49.524-04:002010-10-06T10:35:49.524-04:00So I just Googled "Kirby Crackle" — and ...So I just Googled "Kirby Crackle" — and now I know why the effect looks familiar. My knowledge in comics land is quite spotty, but I *do* recognize the name Jack Kirby as one of the greats.

Having a name for this effect (which I've seen many times over the years) gives me great pleasure. I can't wait to talk to my old roomie about it.Joelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10958941619537909594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265792817762899253.post-66458303567142908242010-10-05T09:43:46.591-04:002010-10-05T09:43:46.591-04:00I forgot to add (although I am not sure this will ...I forgot to add (although I am not sure this will mean anything to you specifically, Joel) that I was thrilled to be able to include a bit of Kirby Crackle in at least one illustration. Again, past influences are showing rather blatantly here, but it is who I am after all.Matt Kishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17854685960260054407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265792817762899253.post-42377694884820716592010-10-05T09:39:34.872-04:002010-10-05T09:39:34.872-04:00One of the things I have enjoyed the most about th...One of the things I have enjoyed the most about this project is that, because "Moby-Dick" is such a wide-ranging novel with chapters on everything from the story of Jonah to the history of whaling to the hunt for the White Whale himself, I have been able to select an incredible variety of concepts and ideas to illustrate. And in an almost prescient manner, Melville himself seems to have known of this project and assisted me, because as soon as I might begin to tire of illustrating whales, he will move on to a chapter discussing the virtues of Christianity versus those of paganism, and so on. It has been a constant, and exciting, challenge!Matt Kishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17854685960260054407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265792817762899253.post-6341463574899221602010-10-04T12:08:58.128-04:002010-10-04T12:08:58.128-04:00Matt!
