Title: "Thou Bildad!" roared Peleg, starting up and clattering about the cabin. "Blast ye, Captain Bildad, if I had followed thy advice in these matters, I would afore now had a conscience to lug about that would be heavy enough to founder the largest ship that ever sailed round Cape Horn."

ballpoint pen and ink on found paper
November 16, 2009
Just curious... where do you find all your found paper?
ReplyDeleteThe vast majority of it is stuff that I saved from the dumpster when I worked for several years at a used book store. Customers would bring books in to sell, and often when there were old encyclopedias or textbooks or repair guides or other stuff that we couldn't re-sell we would just pitch it. I saved boxes and boxes of stuff from there. Also, my wife works at a large university library, and when they discard an interesting book she brings it home to see if I can use it. Finally, I still do comb through the bargain section of used bookstore for interesting papers and guides too.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit of an early exclamation, having just seen it, but this could be my new favorite. I love everything about it, from the claustrophobic terror of the brick walls to the Burtonesque creature with its unblinking eye and singular destructive purpose.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brandon, this is one of my great favorites as well. I love working with ballpoint pen, and I like the almost childish simplicity and mythic nature of the image. I was inspired by some of what I remember from my illustrated storybooks as a kid.
