Title: I, Ishmael, was one of that crew; my shouts had gone up with the rest; my oath had been welded with theirs; and stronger I shouted, and more did I hammer and clinch my oath, because of the dread in my soul.

I like this picture--really simple, but it works well. You've done a few pictures recently that involve the inclusion of text (your own, not the printed stuff on the found paper you're using), and I have to say they're really effective. You're really skilled at integrating words into the images, and I like the overall effect. And I like how the words here echo the image from a few pages ago with the crew chanting "Death to Moby Dick!" (which I also really liked--great colors).
ReplyDeleteThank you Rudy. For better or worse, a lot of that integrating text into the images comes from a lifetime of reading comic books with all of their "Biffs!" "Booms!" and "Pows!" It is a great deal of fun to take some of that visual vocabulary and integrate into something else though, so I'm pleased to know it's effective.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your work. This one in particular reminds me of comic book art. I'd love to showcase some of your works in an 'Artists Spotlight' post on my site Gilbert Musings: Culture of 5
ReplyDeleteWith a link back of course. Let me know if you'd be okay with that. Thanks.
Rose, thank you very much, that is very kind of you. I did grow up reading an inordinate amount of comic books, so it is not surprising to me to see those influences creeping out more and more in this endeavor.
ReplyDeleteI would be delighted and honored for you to share some of my art, thank you very much for that. Your web site is really intriguing and it would be fantastic to see my images there.
Thank you for the opportunity for Matt. May I ask what were your favorite comics growing up?
ReplyDeleteRose, I started reading comics at a very early age. My earliest memories were comics that were probably given to me or passed down. The only specific comics I remember were "The Mighty Thor" and "The Fantastic Four," both from Marvel Comics. While I don't remember much about them, I do very vividly remember the art by Jack Kirby.
ReplyDeleteI started pursuing comics on my own in 5th or 6th grade, and at that time, like most people, I was heavily into the X-Men although I still had a deep fondness for less traditional comics like "Godzilla, King of the Monsters," "The Shogun Warriors," and "ROM: Spaceknight." Most of what I liked involved either monsters, giant robots, outer space, or all three.
I stopped reading comics entirely by college, and although I have occasionally returned to them and picked up a graphic novel, I don't pay much attention to the costumes and capes at all anymore.
