Title: ...yet for all these accumulated associations, with whatever is sweet, and honorable, and sublime, there yet lurks an elusive something in the innermost idea of this hue, which strikes more of panic to the soul than that redness which affrights in blood.

Just got here. I'm a Moby Dick fanatic. Looks like I have about 180 posts to catch up on.
ReplyDeletei've been anticipating your work for this chapter since i first heard about the project. it's such a great chapter, but seems like a particularly challenging one to illustrate (how to paint whiteness?). the lines are eliciting some interesting images; very cool.
ReplyDeleteHi--just discovered your work through Rex Parker's Crossword blog (http://rexwordpuzzle.blogspot.com/).Love your work and the overall concept!
ReplyDeleteHello Wade, and welcome aboard, so to speak. I hope you'll stick around for the next 369 pages.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of viewing the art, it might be easiest to visit my web site (there is a link in the upper right portion of this blog) because you can click through it all sequentially much easier, and see larger images of the art without having to click on each one.
Hello Patrick, I really enjoy getting comments from people that are familiar with the novel. I, too, had been thinking about this chapter for quite some time since I knew it would represent some difficult artistic challenges. So far I am pleased with the results, and it has been interesting to experiment with just how to show "whiteness," especially in the deeply unsettling way Melville describes it.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I always select a passage that I want to illustrate so for page 183 (above) I chose that part of the text simply because I wanted to draw an albatross. Or at least what an albatross calls to mind for me.
I've got a few passages in mind from later in this chapter that again deal with the idea and the horror of "whiteness" so you'll have to let me know if you think I've been successful with those.
Hello Julie, that crossword puzzle blog mention really took me by surprise, but it is always a good thing to have more visitors here. Thank you very much for the feedback, and I hope you'll continue to visit.
