MOBY-DICK, Page 229

Title: "Swim away from me, do ye?" murmured Ahab, gazing over into the water. There seemed but little in the words, but the tone conveyed more of deep helpless sadness than the insane old man had ever before evinced.

  2. Thank you Andy. I went into this one kind of loose, with just a vague idea of what I wanted. It turned out really well and I am really happy with it. I really appreciate the feedback and coming from someone whose brushwork continues to awe me as much as yours does, you know this makes me very very happy.

  3. Don't know why but this one really grabbed me. I think it's a perfect fit with the text.

  4. The deep helpless sadness in that painted purple eye, geezy pete. You so captured it; and the bold dark rent ribbons of black with the grey lightning - it's quite haunting, esp. against the bright little fishies. dang.

  5. Buck and anonymous, this one really did turn out unexpectedly well. Oddly, the more time that goes by, the more and more I like this piece which surprises me. It was created very casually, the product of an experiment with a much larger brush.

The line that this piece illustrates is also one of my favorites, although I think it is one of the saddest things I have ever read. Given the way Ahab is depicted, this simple line adds so much to the captain and to the novel. Melville was an absolute genius.
