Title: At last, gush after gush of clotted red gore, as if it had been the purple lees of red wine, shot into the frighted air; and falling back again, ran dripping down his motionless flanks into the sea. His heart had burst!

First image comes to mind is the Catholic Sacred Heart symbol. That and the other day when I saw Greek Orthodox iconography in a picture speaks I think to the religious nature of the novel and not just Christianity; Melville makes a nod or two to Zoroasterism(is that the right spelling) and Islam. I wonder if there has ever been a Buddhist reading of Moby Dick?!
ReplyDeleteHey Scott, I was actually raised Catholic and remember that kind of imagery very well. I spent more time in church staring at the crucifixes, idols, stained glass, and art then I did paying attention to the priests. You are very accurate though in guessing that I am trying, with some of that kind of imagery, to echo the religious themes in the book.
ReplyDeleteHowever, a Buddhist reading, and visual interpretation, would be fascinating!
