ReplyDeleteAlthough Melville gives no specific details in the text, I have always imagined this scene - one of my favorites because of how odd, eerie and terrifying it quickly becomes - to take place during a blood red dusk on a calm sea. This is one of the small handful of illustrations that turned out almost exactly the way I saw it in my mind.
