Title: I am horror-struck at this antemosaic, unsourced existence of the unspeakable terrors of the whale, which, having been before all time, must needs exist after all humane ages are over.

I love this project. Your drawings are great. I recently finished reading Moby Dick and your drawings pulled me right back into the story.
ReplyDeleteI've also recently had my drawings students read the chapter on the whiteness of the whale. They are doing drawing presently related to the chapter.
Best wishes,
Wes Sherman
Hello Wes, thank you very much for the kind words. It's always incredibly wonderful for me to hear that this project of mine has been the catalyst for readers re-visiting or re-examining the novel in new ways. I really can't think of any feeling more exhilarating than knowing that, especially since at times I have worried that these illustrations might be too esoteric and personal. But maybe in a way, that's part of what draws some people to them and, eventually, back to the book.
ReplyDeleteIt was fascinating to learn of your work with your drawing students, asking them to focus on the whiteness of the whale. That is such a challenging chapter, and I felt that I could have easily done dozens of drawings exploring what Melville laid down. It would be fantastic to see some of their results although, as students, I can understand if that's not possible.
