Wow. Brilliantly beautiful. The colors are lovely, and the linework is perfectly fluid, evoking both the ocean and the cosmos. I was always impressed with your skills with the pen, but your brushwork is starting to exceed your penwork. This is one of my new faves.

ReplyDeleteRudy, thank you, those words are very kind. I wasn't sure this piece would amount to much as I was working on it, but it grew on me quite a bit by the time I was finished. It is often more enjoyable for me to work on these more abstract pieces because I feel less (internal and external) pressure. Something as seemingly simple as a conversation between Ahab and Starbuck can stress me out so much more than a piece like this because it asks me to depict things I have a great deal of trouble depicting. So pieces like this are important to balance and ballast the heavy load of the greater narrative.
ReplyDeleteTitus, I sometimes worry I use found paper that is too obvious given the content of the line I am illustrating, but this star chart was simply too perfect to pass up.
