Titus, I have probably gone on and on about this but aside from my very early drawings (from the late 90s), I have almost always drawing in black and white, pen and ink only. This project has, for me, been a huge challenge but a grand opportunity for me to learn more about the use of color and the different media that carry color, from paints to colored pencils to inks. That being said, I still feel black and white is my strongest skill, and I have found myself gravitating towards that with many of these later drawings. I was concerned this piece would not read as well in simple black and white, but when I was finished with the pen and ink part, I could just tell it was completed as it was. Anything further would have upset that delicate balance.
ReplyDeleteLizzy, I had to work hard to make sure that my symbolism was not too sophomoric or overt, but I do think this turned out much more beautiful than crass. Drawing is such a mysterious process...things are rarely what I expect them to be.
