Title: Hither, and thither, on high, glided the snow-white wings of small, unspeckled birds; these were the gentle thoughts of the feminine air; but to and fro in the deeps, far down in the bottomless blue, rushed mighty leviathans, sword-fish, and sharks; and these were the strong, troubled, murderous thinkings of the masculine sea.

Oh, incredible. Outstanding, the symmetry and the organic form.
ReplyDeleteLooked at it again. Pretty close to being my best one yet. And I thought I was the colour girl!
ReplyDeleteso lovely!
ReplyDeletemy amazement is always renewed.
Titus, I have probably gone on and on about this but aside from my very early drawings (from the late 90s), I have almost always drawing in black and white, pen and ink only. This project has, for me, been a huge challenge but a grand opportunity for me to learn more about the use of color and the different media that carry color, from paints to colored pencils to inks. That being said, I still feel black and white is my strongest skill, and I have found myself gravitating towards that with many of these later drawings. I was concerned this piece would not read as well in simple black and white, but when I was finished with the pen and ink part, I could just tell it was completed as it was. Anything further would have upset that delicate balance.
ReplyDeleteLizzy, I had to work hard to make sure that my symbolism was not too sophomoric or overt, but I do think this turned out much more beautiful than crass. Drawing is such a mysterious process...things are rarely what I expect them to be.
