Titus, this was actually tricky to draw as I am so used to depicting Moby Dick as looking fierce and violently brutally angry. In this passage though, the whale swims right past the men in their boats, "strangely oblivious" to them. I wanted to show the eye looking oblivious, and in such a way that the men would be able to gaze upon it with terrible awe.
Patty, thank you, that is very kind. It is still a very strange feeling to realize that people actually like this art enough to want to own it. But it does feel very nice.
Buck, this may well be their only chance to look - really LOOK - at Moby Dick without being brutally slain. There is in this Whale, as in an erupting volcano or a solar storm or an avalanche, a kind of beauty and majesty that accompanies the terrifying danger and violence.
Scaling brilliant. And something in the eye.
ReplyDeleteWow. I want this one, I want many, but this one.... wow.

ReplyDeleteThe whale is looking the other way. You can be sure the men in the whaleboat aren't.
