  1. This is an interesting pair of images - was the passage split up between the two pages? I don't recall seeing you do one like that before.

  2. Thank you Sean, that's a perceptive question. In this case the two passages were closely connected in the text but still on different pages, at least in my edition. They are so similar because this chapter, number 54, "The Town-Ho's Story," functions very much like a story within the story. Since it is a rather singular and cohesive narrative, I am making these illustrations in a fairly consistent style to emphasize that. All of them are on the same kind of found pages, from the same book, with the same white background, and acrylic paint will be the predominant media. It's perhaps a fairly obvious approach, and it is similar to the way I depicted the folio whales in chapter 32, "Cetology." Those illustrations are pages 129 through 133 in this project.

  3. but they appear to be identical: "...at all events Steelkilt was a tall and noble animal with a head like a Roman, and a flowing golden beard like the tasseled housings of your last viceroy's snorting charger..."

    unless i'm missing something!

  4. Ah, I'm glad you caught this. Since I completed and posted both illustrations on the same day, I made the mistake of using the same quote from the book for the title of each. The title of this second piece was supposed to have been different, and I've now fixed the mistake.
