When I first showed this piece to my wife, she commented on how it reminded her very much of my illustration for page 222. I took a look at both pieces and agreed with her; compositionally they were indeed very similar.
ReplyDeleteAt first that disappointed me. I thought I might be falling into a rut, visualizing things the same way over and over. As time went by though, I actually saw it as a positive thing. There is so much wild variation in so many of these illustrations - in terms of everything from composition to media - that some consistency, some "doubling," actually pleases me.
By the way, this one does look a great deal better (and clearer) if you click on the image to view it larger. That really is Stubb down there at the front of the central boat, and if you click on the image you can see his pipe and the buttons on his coat.
