MOBY-DICK, Page 322

Title: But far more terrible is it to behold, when fathoms down in the sea, you see some sulky whale, floating there suspended, with his prodigious jaw, some fifteen feet long, hanging straight down at right-angles with his body, for all the world like a ship's jib-boom.

  2. Thank you both, Mark and Buck. I had been thinking about old engravings and woodcuts, particular of whales and sea monsters, and that led to this. I felt it needed to be very simple and rather stark, and even though the jaw is not exactly "hanging straight down at right-angles with his body" (which I sketched out and it actually looked rather silly and slack-jawed), I still feel that this piece nicely captures that sense of something "terrible to behold" down in the depths of the sea.
