MOBY-DICK, Page 228

Title: As if the waves had been fullers, this craft was bleached like the skeleton of a stranded walrus. All down her sides, this spectral appearance was traced with long channels of reddened rust, while all her spars and her rigging were like the thick branches of trees furred over with hoar-frost.

  1. Finally, back to work.

I'm starting to enjoy drawing these ships almost as much as I enjoy drawing the whales. This ship is named the Goney, or the Albatross.

  2. Matt, thanks for all of your amazing work. I bought this piece right before your lecture at Powell's. I can't wait to pick it up. I've loved your book and will continue to follow your art. I'm glad to read your Portland visit was so effecting; it was a pleasure to hear you in person.

  3. Hello D. and thank you for giving this piece a home. I looked forward to drawing many things during this project...Queequeg, whales, monsters, etc. But I came to really like making these named ships. Each one became another character, a kind of living symbol for an idea or a feeling. The Goney was one of the first and in a way became a blueprint. You've got a good one here.
