  1. I guess I missed this somehow...this is a great drawing Matt, one of my favorites so far but I can't quite figure out why this one is named after me.
    And I ain't dead quite yet!

  2. Thanks Joe. There are probably some very specific reasons why you like this so much, and it is also one of my favorites. Additionally, they relate to why this is known to me as "The Joe Kuth Memorial Barbecue." It all came together in a somewhat senseless way though.

    First, this illustration is an intentional homage to the great Bob Pepper and this album cover in particular. As I was working out the finer details, I was pondering Pepper and our mutual admiration of his work. I was also listening to a great deal of Frank Zappa, especially the song The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue. All of those things - Pepper's cover, our love of Pepper's art, the Zappa song, and our friendship - conflated and made this piece, in some ways, an homage to you as well. Hence the name.

    Glad you're still alive. Also, next time we hang out, you and I are gonna talk about your love of children's book illustration.
