Hi, Matt. Today, my friend Andrew presented me with justabout the best birthday present ever. Both pieces are so, so awesome. I just wanted to drop a note to thank you for your extra gesture and really personalizing it for me, on top of being an inspiration for me, both in work ethic and artistic technique. I can't wait to get both pieces framed!
Andrew clued me in on some correspondence you two shared. I think we both prefer making a connection a thoughtful, personable guy who might be a bit late on his mailings... over someone robotic who delivers every single thing on time. Thanks again!
Looking at your blog and how much it has grown since 2009. Even have a book out! Congratulations and it's great to see how much your creativity has evolved over the years.
Lizzy, I had been thinking about this piece for years, actually. I first heard it from the well known Gang of Four song and the line hit me pretty hard. I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was a little while before I discovered it was actually from Conrad's great book. This image has actually been in my head for over a decade. The only minor change has been to include the jungle leaves near the bottom, to hew closer to the book.
Emily! Thank you very very much for this comment. It was a great pleasure to be able to create something more personal, and specifically for someone. Andrew shared a bit about you, and a bit about himself, and that small point of contact helped make the extra drawing a true joy to create. I really appreciate what you wrote here. I tend to beat myself up over the little things, and at times I struggle with the (maybe self-imposed) pressure of feeling as if I must create and adopt some kind of internet "persona" instead of just being myself. Being me always wins in the end, and this makes me feel a lot better about that.
Holy cow, Crysti! I remember you from way back! I even remember emailing you to ask you for advice on how to move forward with the art and the possibility of a book. You gave me some really sound, principled, and ethical advice that I took to heart, and it all turned out extremely well. It is very good to hear from you again, and I truly hope all is well with you.
wonders of the internet - as i scroll down to your response, i google "we live as we dream... alone gang of four" and here in paris at 11pm i discover the original inspiration for your piece - it is magical and scary (this reminds me of discovering joy division, which the meanderings of my life had kept me from way back when) what an adventure!
wow! very magestic! very striking. wonderful.
