Title: ...as we thus tore a white gash in the sea, on all sides menaced as we flew, by the crazed creatures to and fro rushing about us...

  1. So far in this project, I have never echoed myself this directly or immediately. This image resembles the illustration for the prior page in many ways, and I used the same paints and inks for it as well. I did this because I truly enjoyed working on the illustration for page 373 and wasn't ready to let that go yet. The next piece will be quite different though.

  2. I love it! It's charming but very frightening at the same time.

Sometimes it's worth echoing oneself as a discipline, to find something fresh in what you think you're done with.

  3. I agree, Elizabeth, and one of the things that comforts me about this visual "echoing" is the presence of that same kind of doubling in the book "Moby-Dick." So, almost without intending to, these illustrations are in some ways mirroring the text itself. I suppose that as I near the end of this project, it is hewing closer to the text than I might have realized, especially at the beginning.
