MOBY-DICK, Page 417

Title: "So in this vale of Death, God girds us round; and over all our gloom, the sun of Righteousness still shines a beacon and a hope. If we bend down our eyes, the dark vale shows her mouldy soil; but if we lift them, the bright sun meets our glance half way, to cheer."

  1. The devout Starbuck sees in the doubloon not a reflection of himself and his own gaze, but God's shining "sun of Righteousness." Note that the depiction of the doubloon, while slightly larger here, is identical in color, shape and texture, to the doubloon below, reflected in Ahab's eye. This parallel will continue for the next three doubloon illustrations.
